Compagnie Tiuri

A stage for humanity
“Our wish has never been to be as accessible as possible, but rather to be as human as possible,” says Jordy Dik, artistic leader of Compagnie Tiuri. For five years now, his inclusive professional company has been part of the dance world and has already reached many milestones. Yet Jordy hopes that Compagnie Tiuri evokes more than inclusivity. “The concept of limitation hangs over us like a kind of cloud. We want instead to make visible the humanity that connects us all.”

“If you work with what is there, there are no barriers”

“You only have to remove barriers if they are there at all.” Jordy says that he has taught the company and himself to work only with what is there, in order to arrive at the creative core. Jordy’s methods are aimed at this: “Possibilities arise by looking at where someone stands as a performer. What is someone good at? What is going on in that person’s life? I try above all not to think in boxes and to remain open to what is present in the moment.”

Talent deserves a stage

Compagnie Tiuri forms part of the overarching organisation Tiuri: play space, workspace and free space in one. Tiuri has been cultivating the theatre talent of people with a disability for twenty years. Jordy says: “Over fifteen years later, Compagnie Tiuri was established, because I simply felt that the talent at Tiuri was incredibly high. The whole of the Netherlands should see these special talents.”

Letting go & taking along

Despite the many successes, Jordy still has plenty of dreams for the company. “I would very much like us to let go of the concept of limitation, because it quite literally only limits us. It places someone in a box. It creates prejudices and ensures that you reach a ceiling. That is precisely why we are working to make Compagnie Tiuri the most human company in the Netherlands. And with the most human company in the Netherlands, there simply belong very different people. Who can continue to develop infinitely.”
