Sustainability

Green for Tomorrow

As an organization, we are aware of the ecological footprint we leave behind. And although we will never be the most sustainable theater in the Netherlands as a performing arts institution, we can choose to be green. After all, a better world starts with organizations that make conscious choices. And when there are two choices, we always choose the most sustainable one.

Both in front of and behind the scenes, we encourage guests and colleagues to make sustainable choices. Our Green Team is a driving force in this. They embrace the Theatre Green Book, the guideline for making climate-neutral theater, and ensure that 'green and sustainable' remain on the internal agenda. They inspire colleagues to think about how we can do even better for future generations.

The municipality of Tilburg owns the building. We are in continuous dialogue with them about what we can do to make our buildings more climate-neutral.

What do you, our guest, notice?

Our service is still as you have come to expect from us. However, things do change over time. For instance, the share of printed materials has drastically decreased; and when we choose to print, we only do so climate-neutrally and on FSC paper. Tickets? You don’t need to print them, but show them on your phone.

The website is hosted green by a company with an energy effectiveness usage certification, we make use of lazy loading, and we regularly clean up to ensure that we do not take up unnecessary cloud space.

On the menu of Boove & Benee, you can also see that we make choices: 60% vegetarian, sustainable, and local. Our clothing suppliers use recycled materials and sustainable fibers such as organic cotton and produce almost everything in Europe.

And if you come to visit us? Please try – if possible – to arrive by bike or public transport. We really appreciate it!

Behind the Scenes and in Operations

The plastic and paper cups have left the building, water-saving faucets are installed everywhere, and lights are on motion sensors. We are currently in the midst of the LED transition, which involves replacing lighting in all spaces (the halls and the foyers). We utilize a building management system and only heat the spaces where people are actually present.

In the Theater, all air handling units will be replaced in the theater season ‘24-’25, and a heat wheel will be installed on the roof. In the following season, the Concert Hall will receive a sustainable makeover. There, the air handling units will also be replaced by hot-cold recovery systems. And – challenging! – the beautiful and extensive light artwork by Peter Struycken on the ceiling of the Concert Hall will be made more sustainable.

Green Key

We are proud to announce that Schouwburg & Concertzaal Tilburg has received the Gold Green Key certificate! This international eco-label recognizes our efforts to contribute to a sustainable environment and a livable and healthy world, without compromising comfort and quality for our guests.

By meeting sustainability standards across various themes, Schouwburg & Concertzaal Tilburg goes beyond just energy and water conservation. These standards are set by the Foundation for Environmental Education and are periodically audited.
