Soul music originated in the United States in the late 1950s and early 1960s. The music emerged from gospel, rhythm-and-blues, and especially emotion. Soul was never about perfect singing, but about feeling. You hear that immediately in the voice of Otis Redding and in the power of Aretha Franklin. They created songs that were not limited by fixed rules. Their songs told stories about love, loss, hope, and everything in between.

In the early 1960s, the Motown studios emerged in Detroit. Legendary artists like The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder, and Marvin Gaye began their careers there. Motown polished the raw emotion of soul into a refined, often danceable sound, with catchy rhythms and choruses that linger in your mind for days.

Soul and Motown can often be recognized within a few seconds. The vocals are always central: warm, raw, and sincere. The music breathes and moves around it. Lead vocals and background vocals respond to each other as if they are in a conversation. The groove pulls you in and won’t let you go. Rich horn and string arrangements complete the sound. Everything is on point, but it never feels contrived.
